| In the majority of cases, a procedure called "Sclerotherapy" is used to treat surface veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a small amount of solution (called a sclerosing solution), directly into the blood vessel. Sclerotherapy has been used to treat veins since the 1930's. The sclerosing solution was specifically designed for vein treatment. It is rapidly inactivated after contact with the vein wall. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, which in turn causes the treated vein to collapse. Soon the unused vein will be reabsorbed by the body.. Over a period of weeks, the vessel fades from view.
A very fine needle is used for treatment, which minimises any discomfort. During each treatment many vessels may be injected. Depending on a vessel's size, it may need to be injected more than once.
After treatment you will be required to wear a special venous compression stocking to assist in sealing off the abnormal veins. The modern graduated compression stockings used at The Varicose Vein clinic combine the best of modern technology with comfort and style. These flesh-coloured stockings are both comfortable and unobtrusive. The amount of time you are required to wear the stocking varies between 3 to 7 days. Compression stockings minimise the formation of bruising and pigmentation. Wearing the stocking correctly may reduce the number of treatments necessary , by assisting in the closure of the vein, and may also reduce the risk of developing venous thrombosis or the possibility of recurrence.
